Manchester United finished behind Liverpool for the first time in 12 years last season. Midfielder Darren Fletcher has stated that he is looking to get revenge as soon as possible. United will be having a great opportunity to do so when they take on Liverpool in the International Champions Cup final. It will take place in the Sun Life stadium in Miami. Both teams come into the encounter after having stayed unbeaten in the pre-season tour so far, but one of them will lose their record after the match.
The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool goes back several decades, but it is the Red Devils who have had the upper hand in this rivalry in the last two decades. United have won league title after league title, while they have watched Liverpool struggled to even mount a title challenge in the last two decades. Last season, though, witnessed a major shift in power after United failed to even qualify for the Champions League whereas Liverpool almost came close to winning the 19th league title. It would have also been their first Premier League title.
Fletcher has been part of several Manchester United teams that have comfortably beaten Liverpool in the past. He says that it is time for a repeat once again in order to put behind the disappointment of last season.
“It’s Manchester United v Liverpool. I know it’s only pre-season and it’s just a summer competition, but when United play Liverpool, it’s always a big deal. We want to win every match, and it’s no different when we play Liverpool. We have just beaten Real Madrid, the European champions, and we now want to go on and beat Liverpool. That is the sort of thing that gives the squad confidence. We have a lot of young players out here and you have to remember that,” said Fletcher.
