Barcelona frontman Luis Suarez will play no part for Uruguay during the off-season after he sustained a hamstring niggle while training with the Copa del Rey winners.
Suarez was already suspended for the Cup final last weekend, but he managed to make things worse for himself by injuring his hamstring prior to Luis Enrique’s farewell match.The former Liverpool man did not have a bright season as in the previous one, but he still bagged 37 goals across all competitions for Barcelona, who lost their grasp on the La Liga title.
Barcelona fought hard to achieve their league success, but Real Madrid hanged on their three point lead until the end of the season.Suarez and Edinson Cavani are undoubtedly the stand out performers for Uruguay, and it appears that luck is not on Suarez’s side as he often finds himself out of the national reckoning.The 30-year-old was largely missed during the Copa America Centenario last year where he was not deemed fit enough to take part on the playing field.Uruguay take on the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on June 4th before moving on to Nice where they face off against Italy in a neutral venue.
Suarez’s team are currently placed third in the World Cup qualifiers, but there is just a point separating them from Argentina, who hold onto the inter-confederation playoff spot.The South American ace has bagged 121 goals during his three-year spell with the Catalan giants, but this has not been sufficient to gain him recognition with FIFA.Suarez failed to make the top three of the Ballon d’Or shortlist despite having enjoyed his best ever season in his professional career last term (59 goals).
The ex- Ajax striker feels that he is not being marketed enough as some of his other compatriots, and this diminishes his chances of earning better recognition.
