The winners and losers of the World Cup

Winners

Football in the USA: Everyone loves an underdog story and right from when the draw was made for the World Cup the United States certainly fitted into that bracket. Placed in a group with European powerhouses Germany and Portugal, as well as Ghana, the Yanks were not expected to make it beyond the first round.

Instead, not only did they hold their own and reach the last-16, they played out arguably the most enjoyable games of the competition.

The excitement and intensity of the games involving the States sucked in the fans and across the country bars and fans parks resounded with the chant of “I believe that we can win!”. If ever there was a chance for soccer to become mainstream in the US then it has to be now. Read more…

Mujica Criticises FIFA With Strong Words

Uruguay’s President Jose Mujica has criticised FIFA with a strong choice of words, which is likely to land him in major trouble. Mujica’s criticism of the world’s biggest football Association comes after the banned striker Luis Suarez for four months from any form of football activity. Uruguay striker Suarez was found guilty of biting Italy defender Chiellini in the shoulder when the two sides met each other in the final group match of the World Cup 2014. Suarez, who has already been found guilty of the same offence twice in his career, did not show any remorse after the incident.

This is thought to have been one of the key factors in FIFA giving this heavy ban, which is likely to make him miss around 18 matches for club and country. Suarez was absent from Uruguay’s final match of the World Cup against Colombia. They were toothless in the 2-0 defeat against the South American opponents, as they crashed out of the World Cup. Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez failed to blame this exit on the absence of Suarez, but it is thought to have been the chief reason.

FIFA, though, are unlikely to take the criticism from Mujica in an easy manner. It is quite possible that Uruguay, as a country, will have to face a severe punishment. “Fifa are a bunch of old sons of bitches. They could have punished him but not given him this fascist ban,” said the president. Uruguay recently informed FIFA that they will appeal against the ban. However, it looks highly unlikely that Suarez will be able to be successful in the attempts. He stated in his defence that he fell off the shoulder of Chiellini after losing his balance, while television replays appear to have not convinced FIFA that it was the case.

Suarez Looking To be Fit For World Cup

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is likely to be fit for the World Cup 2014, which will be a major boost for Uruguay. There were a lot of fears that he would miss the tournament after undergoing any operation a few weeks ago. However, he has made swift progress from the injury and is likely to be part of the tournament. Despite returning to full training, it is looking highly unlikely that Suarez will be part of the opening match against Costa Rica. He is likely to be rested for this encounter since Uruguay will want him to be available for the subsequent matches against Italy and England.

PSG striker Edinson Cavani recently said that the morale hit a low after they learnt that the 27-year-old had suffered an injury. Suarez is undoubtedly one of the top strikers in the world right now. He is the recipient of the PFA Player of the Year award after having scored 31 goals in the league last season. He was one of the top scorers in the top five European leagues. Even though Cavani is also an excellent striker, he does not get the number of goals that Suarez scores. Further, Suarez is also able to open tight defences with his dribbling skills.

“The knee is getting better. I feel very good. I have to go day by day but everything is on the right way. I wanted to thank you for all the support I received during this week and now my mind is focused on the World Cup,” said the striker in a personal message to the fans. Suarez has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in the last few weeks. The Spanish champions are ready to pay around £ 75 million for the striker. For the moment, he is concentrating on the World Cup.
