Valencia were able to overturn a three goal deficit in the second leg of their quarter-final tie with Basel in the Europa League to progress into the last four.
The Spanish side won the game 3-0 after 90 minutes which forced extra-time at the Mestalla Stadium. They then extended their score to 5-0 following the addition half an hour which left them 5-3 up on aggregate.
Paco Alcacer was the hero of the night for Valencia as he was able to secure a hat-trick in the victory. The first of his three goals came on 38 minutes. He was able to control Joao Pereira’s ball on his chest before firing past Basel’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer to reward first goalscorer punters at Betfair.
The deficit in the tie was reduced even further before the break when Eduardo Vargas scored off Fede Cartabia’s well taken corner.
Valencia continued to dominate in the second half and they got their reward when Alcacer levelled the scores over the two legs. The ball fell to the striker when Sommer parried Pereira’s initial shot into his path.
In extra-time, Alcacer put the Spaniards in front for the first time in the quarter-final contest on 113 minutes. They then stretched away from Basel not long after with a goal from Juan Bernant.
The Swiss side finished the game with nine men as both Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro were shown red during extra-time in what was miserable night for the visitors.
It is the first time any team has overcome a three goal deficit in the Europa League since the 2009/10 campaign.
Valenica are the outsides of the four teams left in the competition with Betfair. Juventus are the favourites and would have home advantage in the final if they were to make it through their semi-final contest.
